State Health Department
Full Form of SHD
What is SHD?
The State Health Department (SHD) is the principal government body responsible for managing and implementing public health services at the state level across India. Operating under the administrative control of each state government, the SHD works in close coordination with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to deliver healthcare services to citizens through a vast network of primary health centres, community health centres, district hospitals, and government medical colleges. The department oversees crucial programmes such as immunisation drives, maternal and child health initiatives, disease surveillance, family planning, and the National Health Mission. In India, the SHD is typically headed by the Director of Health Services or Commissioner of Health, who reports to the state health minister and ensures effective last-mile delivery of health schemes. The department also plays a key role in policy formulation, regulation of medical education, recruitment of doctors and paramedics, and managing epidemics and public health emergencies. Knowledge of the structure and functioning of the SHD is highly relevant for candidates preparing for UPSC, state public service commissions, and competitive examinations related to public administration and healthcare governance.
