State Government Quota

What is SGQ?

State Government Quota, commonly abbreviated as SGQ, refers to the reservation of seats in professional colleges across India that fall under the jurisdiction of individual state governments. Under this system, a fixed percentage of seats in medical, engineering, and other professional courses are reserved for candidates who are domiciled in that particular state. The remaining seats are typically filled under the All India Quota (AIQ), which is managed centrally. The SGQ ensures that local students get fair access to educational opportunities within their home state and helps maintain regional representation. Each state releases its own merit lists, cutoff ranks, and counselling schedules for these seats. The quota is highly relevant for students appearing in competitive exams such as NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and various state-level entrance tests, as the cutoff marks for SGQ seats are usually lower than those for the All India Quota, making it an important pathway for lakhs of aspirants every year.
