Real World Evidence
Full Form of RWE
What is RWE?
Real World Evidence, commonly abbreviated as RWE, refers to clinical evidence gathered about a medical product or treatment from real-world settings outside the controlled environment of traditional clinical trials. This includes data collected from electronic health records, insurance claims databases, patient registries, wearable devices, and observational studies conducted in everyday healthcare practice. In India, RWE has gained significant importance as the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) increasingly encourage its use for regulatory submissions, post-marketing surveillance, and health technology assessments. Pharmaceutical companies, Contract Research Organisations (CROs), and academic institutions across cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore actively use RWE to support drug approvals, demonstrate long-term safety, and shape treatment guidelines for Indian populations. The National Health Authority also looks at RWE for policy decisions under Ayushman Bharat. For students preparing for medical, pharmacy, or clinical research entrance exams and certifications, understanding RWE concepts is becoming essential as it represents a rapidly expanding field within evidence-based medicine and pharmacovigilance.
