Rotavirus Vaccine

What is RRV?

Rotavirus Vaccine, commonly abbreviated as RRV, is an immunisation preparation designed to protect infants and young children from rotavirus infections, which are the leading cause of severe diarrhoeal disease and dehydration in children under five years of age. In India, rotavirus accounts for a significant share of childhood diarrhoea-related hospitalisations and deaths, particularly in rural and low-income areas. The Government of India introduced the rotavirus vaccine into the Universal Immunization Programme in a phased manner starting in 2016, beginning with states like Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam, before expanding nationwide. The vaccine is administered orally in multiple doses, typically at six, ten, and fourteen weeks of age as part of the routine immunisation schedule. It works by stimulating the child's immune system to produce antibodies against the virus, thereby preventing severe gastroenteritis. India has also developed its own indigenous rotavirus vaccine called ROTAVAC, manufactured by Bharat Biotech, marking a major milestone in public health and vaccine self-reliance. For competitive exams, questions on RRV frequently appear in UPSC, AIIMS, and state public service examinations covering topics like national immunisation programmes and child health initiatives.
