Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus
Full Form of DPT
What is DPT?
DPT stands for Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus. It refers to a combination vaccine used to protect against these three serious bacterial infections. In India, the DPT vaccine is a cornerstone of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), administered to infants and children as part of a scheduled routine. Diphtheria affects the respiratory system and can cause breathing difficulties; pertussis (whooping cough) leads to severe coughing spells; tetanus causes painful muscle stiffness and lockjaw. The vaccine is given in multiple doses starting at six weeks of age, with booster doses later in childhood. It is widely available at government health centers and hospitals across the country, helping to dramatically reduce the incidence of these diseases. The DPT vaccine is often combined with other vaccines like Hib or IPV in a single shot for convenience. Exam relevance: Questions on the DPT vaccine appear in medical entrance exams (NEET) and public health topics in UPSC and state PCS exams.
