Bacillus Calmette-Guérin
Full Form of BCG
What is BCG?
BCG, or Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, is a vaccine primarily used against tuberculosis (TB). Developed from a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, it is one of the oldest vaccines still in wide use. In India, BCG is a cornerstone of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), administered to newborns shortly after birth, often within the first 48 hours, to prevent severe forms of TB like tuberculous meningitis and miliary TB. The vaccine is also used as a therapy for bladder cancer in some countries. Despite its variable efficacy in preventing pulmonary TB in adults, BCG remains crucial in high-burden settings like India, where TB is a major public health challenge. The vaccine is given intradermally, typically on the upper arm, and leaves a characteristic scar. For competitive exams like NEET PG and nursing exams, BCG is a frequently tested topic, especially its composition, schedule, and indications.
