What is BCG?
BCG, or Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, is a vaccine primarily used against tuberculosis (TB). Developed from a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, it is one of the oldest vaccines still in wide use. In India, BCG is a cornerstone of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), administered to newborns shortly after birth, often within the first 48 hours, to prevent severe forms of TB like tuberculous meningitis and miliary TB.
