Universal Immunization Programme
Full Form of UIP
What is UIP?
The Universal Immunization Programme, popularly known as UIP, is one of the largest public health initiatives in the world, run by the Government of India. Launched in 1985 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the programme provides free vaccination to children and pregnant women against twelve vaccine-preventable diseases including tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, hepatitis B, and rotavirus. The Universal Immunization Programme is a key component of the National Health Mission and operates through a vast network of primary health centres, sub-centres, and Anganwadi workers across rural and urban India. To strengthen routine immunization coverage, the government launched Mission Indradhanush in 2014, followed by Intensified Mission Indradhanush, aiming to reach children in underserved and remote areas. UIP is highly relevant for aspirants preparing for UPSC, NEET, and other competitive exams, as questions on India's health policies frequently appear in general studies and public health sections. The programme has played a vital role in eradicating polio from India and significantly reducing infant and child mortality rates across the country over the past four decades.
