Retinopathy of Prematurity
Full Form of ROP
What is ROP?
Retinopathy of Prematurity, commonly abbreviated as ROP, is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, particularly those born before 34 weeks of gestation or weighing less than 2000 grams at birth. The condition occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop in the retina, which can lead to retinal detachment and permanent vision loss if left untreated. In India, ROP has emerged as a significant public health concern because the country records one of the highest numbers of premature births globally, and survival rates of preterm babies have improved with better neonatal intensive care. The Government of India, through the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, has introduced ROP screening guidelines mandating that all at-risk newborns undergo dilated fundus examination by a trained ophthalmologist within the first four weeks of life. Treatment options include laser photocoagulation, anti-VEGF injections, and cryotherapy. The topic is frequently tested in postgraduate medical entrance examinations such as NEET PG, AIIMS, and DNB.
