Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Full Form of NICU
What is NICU?
A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a specialized hospital ward designed to provide intensive medical care for newborn infants, particularly those born prematurely, with low birth weight, or with critical medical conditions such as respiratory distress, infections, or congenital anomalies. In India, the NICU plays a crucial role in reducing infant mortality rates, which remain a significant public health challenge. These units are typically found in tertiary care hospitals, medical college hospitals, and large private facilities in urban and semi-urban areas, while rural regions face a shortage of such advanced neonatal services. The NICU is equipped with incubators, ventilators, phototherapy units, and continuous monitoring systems, staffed by neonatologists, trained nurses, and respiratory therapists. It is used round the clock for managing high-risk newborns and providing life-saving interventions like surfactant therapy, parenteral nutrition, and kangaroo mother care. For students preparing for medical entrance exams like NEET PG or AIIMS, topics such as NICU care levels (Level I, II, III), common neonatal conditions, and India-specific initiatives like the India Newborn Action Plan (INAP) are frequently tested. The NICU remains a cornerstone of neonatal healthcare, directly impacting the survival and long-term development of vulnerable infants.
