Roux-en-Y
Full Form of RNY
What is RNY?
Roux-en-Y (RNY) is a surgical technique primarily associated with bariatric and gastrointestinal procedures. It refers to a configuration where the small intestine is divided and reattached in a Y-shaped pattern, allowing digestive juices to meet ingested food lower down the digestive tract. The most common application of RNY is in Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, which is widely performed for weight loss in patients with severe obesity. In India, this procedure has gained significant traction over the past decade as obesity rates have risen due to changing lifestyles, urbanisation, and dietary shifts. Several leading hospitals in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai offer this surgery, with patients often travelling from tier-2 and tier-3 cities seeking treatment. The procedure is also used in reconstructing the digestive system after gastrectomy for stomach cancer. RNY is a term frequently encountered by medical students, surgical residents, and nursing professionals during their training. For those preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS, or other medical entrance and licensing examinations in India, understanding the technical aspects of RNY procedures, including their indications, complications, and post-operative care, is considered essential knowledge.
