Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Full Form of IBD
What is IBD?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a group of chronic inflammatory conditions that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract, with the two main subtypes being Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions involve an abnormal immune response against the intestinal lining, leading to symptoms like persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, and rectal bleeding. In India, IBD has been increasingly recognized as a significant health concern, with rising incidence rates over the past two decades, attributed partly to changes in diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors. It is diagnosed through a combination of endoscopic, imaging, and histological evaluations, and management involves anti-inflammatory medications, immunosuppressants, biologics, and sometimes surgery. IBD is commonly discussed in gastroenterology clinics, medical textbooks, and continuing medical education programs. For students preparing for competitive exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and USMLE, understanding the pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and treatment algorithms of IBD is essential. The condition often requires long-term multidisciplinary care, and patient awareness in India is gradually improving with better access to specialized gastrointestinal services.
