Geographical Indication
Full Form of GI
What is GI?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In India, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 provides legal protection for such products, preventing unauthorized use of the GI tag. The registration is administered by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai. GI tags are commonly applied to agricultural goods, foodstuffs, handicrafts, and industrial products. Examples include Darjeeling tea, Basmati rice, Mysore silk, and Pochampally Ikat. The tag helps producers gain premium pricing, protect traditional knowledge, and promote regional economic development. It is widely used in marketing and legal disputes. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, GI is a key topic in intellectual property rights and Indian economy. Understanding GI is essential for students of law, commerce, and agriculture. The system aligns with TRIPS Agreement under WTO.
