Radical Nephroureterectomy
Full Form of RNU
What is RNU?
Radical Nephroureterectomy, commonly abbreviated as RNU, is a major urological surgical procedure performed to treat upper tract urothelial carcinoma affecting the renal pelvis and ureter. The surgery involves complete removal of the kidney along with its entire ureter, a cuff of the bladder, and surrounding fatty tissue, ensuring no residual malignant cells remain. In India, RNU is performed in advanced tertiary care hospitals and dedicated urology departments of premier institutions such as AIIMS, PGI Chandigarh, and several reputed corporate hospitals across metropolitan cities. The procedure remains the gold standard for high-risk upper tract urothelial cancer and is frequently followed by adjuvant chemotherapy, intravesical therapy, or immunotherapy depending on the final pathology report. Indian urologists encounter a growing number of cases requiring RNU due to rising urothelial cancer rates linked to smoking, occupational chemical exposure, and chronic analgesic use. For medical students preparing for NEET PG, INI-CET, or urology super-specialty entrance examinations, understanding the indications, surgical approaches including open, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques, along with post-operative complications of RNU forms an essential part of the curriculum.
