What is NSS?
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a flagship community service programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Launched in 1969, it aims to develop student personality through volunteer service in rural and urban communities. NSS operates in colleges and universities across India, encouraging students to participate in activities like cleanliness drives, tree plantation, blood donation camps, adult literacy programmes, disaster relief, and awareness campaigns on health, sanitation, and civic issues. Each NSS volunteer is required to complete at least 120 hours of service over two years, along with participation in a special camp of seven days.
