What is QSN?
A Quantum Secure Network (QSN) is a communications infrastructure that leverages quantum cryptography, primarily Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), to ensure theoretically unbreakable encryption of data transmitted between nodes. Unlike classical networks that rely on mathematical complexity for security, QSNs exploit the principles of quantum mechanics—any eavesdropping attempt disturbs the quantum state and is instantly detectable. In India, QSN research and deployment are gaining momentum, with organizations like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras actively working on pilot projects. These networks are being tested for secure government communications, financial transactions, and defence applications. The National Quantum Mission, launched in 2023, aims to build a quantum network backbone across the country over the next decade. QSNs are typically used in high-security environments where data integrity is critical, such as banking, military command centers, and critical infrastructure.
