What is PKI?
Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is a framework of policies, procedures, hardware, software, and people that enables the creation, distribution, management, and revocation of digital certificates and public-key encryption. In India, PKI plays a critical role in securing online transactions, digital signatures, and identity verification under initiatives like Digital India and e-governance services such as Aadhaar authentication and Income Tax filing. It is widely used by enterprises, banks, and government portals to secure email, VPNs, web traffic (via SSL/TLS), and code signing. PKI relies on Certificate Authorities (CAs) to issue and validate certificates, ensuring that the public key belongs to a legitimate entity.
