Secure Sockets Layer
Full Form of SSL
What is SSL?
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a cryptographic protocol designed to ensure secure communication over a computer network. In the Indian context, SSL is widely used by banks, e-commerce platforms, government portals, and educational websites to encrypt data transmitted between a user's browser and the server. It prevents eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery. Websites implementing SSL display a padlock icon in the address bar and use HTTPS instead of HTTP. The Reserve Bank of India mandates SSL for all online banking transactions, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recommends SSL for all government websites handling sensitive data. SSL is also crucial for securing payment gateways used by Indian fintech companies like Paytm, PhonePe, and Razorpay. While SSL has been largely superseded by its successor, Transport Layer Security (TLS), the term "SSL" remains common in everyday usage. For competitive exams like IBPS, RRB, and UPSC, understanding SSL is important for questions on cybersecurity, internet protocols, and digital security initiatives. SSL certificates are issued by Certificate Authorities (CAs) such as India's eMudhra and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL).
