Quality of Life
Full Form of QOL
What is QOL?
Quality of Life (QOL) is a multidimensional concept that encompasses an individual's physical health, psychological state, social relationships, and environment. In India, QOL is increasingly used in healthcare outcomes research, public policy evaluation, and social development programs. It is measured through both objective indicators like income, literacy, and life expectancy, and subjective assessments of well-being and satisfaction. Government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Smart Cities Mission explicitly aim to enhance QOL for citizens. QOL assessments are employed in clinical trials, urban planning, and corporate employee wellness initiatives. For students, understanding QOL is relevant for subjects like sociology, economics, public health, and medicine, especially for competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, and postgraduate entrance tests. The World Health Organization defines QOL as individuals' perception of their position in life in the context of their culture and value systems. In India, regional variations in QOL are studied to identify disparities and target interventions. The concept also links to sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly good health and well-being (SDG 3) and reduced inequalities (SDG 10). As India progresses, QOL remains a key metric for evaluating development beyond mere economic growth.
