Pradhan Zila Hospital
Full Form of PZH
What is PZH?
Pradhan Zila Hospital (PZH) is the Hindi term for the Primary District Hospital, which functions as the central government healthcare facility at the district level in India. These hospitals are critical components of the public health system, providing secondary care services to rural and semi-urban populations. PZHs offer outpatient departments, inpatient wards, emergency services, basic surgical facilities, maternal and child health services, and diagnostic labs. They act as referral hubs for primary health centres (PHCs) and community health centres (CHCs) within the district. In India, each district typically has at least one PZH, often located in the district headquarters, and they are managed by the state health department under the National Health Mission. The term is widely used in health administration reports, government circulars, and medical infrastructure planning. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or state health services, understanding the hierarchy of PZH within the three-tier public health system is important as it reflects India's decentralised healthcare delivery model. PZHs also play a key role during disease outbreaks and national health campaigns.
