Passenger Reservation Unit
Full Form of PRU
What is PRU?
The Passenger Reservation Unit (PRU) is a computerised system operated by Indian Railways to handle the reservation, cancellation, and management of train tickets across the country. It serves as the backbone of the railway reservation network, connecting over 2,000 reservation counters at railway stations, booking offices, and authorised agents. The PRU processes millions of transactions daily, allowing passengers to book tickets for any train, class, and quota, including Tatkal, senior citizen, and ladies quotas. It integrates with the Passenger Name Record (PNR) system to maintain records, handle waitlisted and confirmed berths, and facilitate chart preparation before train departure. The PRU is used by railway staff at counters, by passengers walking into stations, and by third-party agents via licensed terminals. In the context of competitive exams like Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) or SSC exams, knowledge of the PRU is essential for questions related to Indian Railways' reservation infrastructure and ticketing procedures.
