Passenger Name Record
Full Form of PNR
What is PNR?
A Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to a travel booking, typically for trains or flights. In the Indian context, it is most widely associated with Indian Railways, where a 10-digit PNR number is generated when a passenger books a ticket via IRCTC or a reservation counter. This record contains all journey details such as passenger name, train number, date of travel, class, and seat allocation. PNR is crucial for checking booking confirmation status—whether a ticket is confirmed (CNF), in the Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) list, or on the waiting list (WL). The status can be verified online through the IRCTC website, mobile apps, or SMS. For aviation, PNR is used by airlines like IndiGo and Air India to manage reservations. In India, PNR numbers are also used by third-party travel portals and railway enquiry services like 139. Knowledge of PNR and its status is important for competitive exams such as RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) and related transport sector tests, where questions on railway reservation procedures appear. PNR ensures efficient management of passenger data and journey tracking across the country's vast rail network.
