Purified Protein Derivative
Full Form of PPD
What is PPD?
Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) is a sterile solution of proteins extracted from the tuberculosis bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is used as the antigen in the Mantoux test or tuberculin skin test, which is a standard diagnostic tool to detect latent or active tuberculosis infection. In India, where tuberculosis remains a major public health concern, the PPD test is widely employed in hospitals, clinics, and community health camps for screening high-risk populations, including contacts of TB patients and healthcare workers. The test involves injecting a small amount of PPD into the skin of the forearm and measuring the induration after 48–72 hours. A positive reaction indicates prior exposure to the TB bacteria, but it does not distinguish between latent infection and active disease. PPD is also utilized in veterinary medicine for testing cattle. For medical students and professionals preparing for examinations like NEET PG or AIIMS, understanding the PPD test’s procedure, interpretation, and limitations is essential, as it frequently appears in microbiology and tuberculosis-related questions.
