What is PMM?
Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMM) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India launched on April 8, 2015, by the Prime Minister to provide easy and collateral-free loans to micro-entrepreneurs, small businesses, and self-employed individuals. The scheme aims to foster entrepreneurship and generate employment in rural and urban areas by offering loans under three categories: Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishore (₹50,001 to ₹5 lakh), and Tarun (₹5,00,001 to ₹10 lakh). PMM is implemented through member lending institutions (MLIs) such as banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and microfinance institutions. It is widely used across India to support small-scale ventures like kirana shops, artisans, women entrepreneurs, and service providers. The scheme is particularly relevant for aspirants preparing for government exams like UPSC, banking, and SSC, as questions on flagship social welfare and financial inclusion programs frequently appear. PMM has significantly improved access to formal credit for the unbanked and underprivileged, driving financial inclusion and grassroots economic development.
