Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency
Full Form of MUDRA
What is MUDRA?
MUDRA (Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency) is a financial institution established by the Government of India on April 8, 2015, under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY). It operates as a refinancing agency for banks, microfinance institutions, and other lenders providing loans to micro-enterprises and small businesses with loan amounts up to ₹10 lakh. MUDRA’s primary role is to fund and promote entrepreneurship among non-corporate, non-farm small business owners, such as street vendors, artisans, and small manufacturers, who often lack access to formal banking channels. The agency categorizes loans under three schemes: Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishor (₹50,001 to ₹5 lakh), and Tarun (₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh). In India, MUDRA is widely referenced in government policy documents, banking circulars, and financial literacy campaigns. It is particularly relevant for students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, as questions on financial inclusion schemes often appear. MUDRA has significantly contributed to the formalization of India’s micro-enterprise sector, promoting self-employment and aligning with the government’s vision of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’.
