Pension Fund Distributor
Full Form of PFD
What is PFD?
A Pension Fund Distributor (PFD) is a certified intermediary authorized by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) to sell and service National Pension System (NPS) accounts in India. PFDs act as the primary touchpoint for individual subscribers, helping them open NPS accounts, choose pension fund managers, and manage contributions. They can be banks, financial institutions, or individual agents who have passed the required certification exam conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) or other approved bodies. PFDs play a crucial role in expanding NPS penetration, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where digital literacy is lower. They are compensated through commissions set by PFRDA, making it a sustainable career option for financial advisors. The concept gained prominence after the government mandated NPS for all new central government employees in 2004 and later opened it to all citizens. For competitive exams like IBPS, RBI, and SEBI Grade A, questions on PFD and NPS architecture are common. Understanding the role of a PFD is essential for banking and finance students as it represents the retail distribution backbone of India's pension reforms.
