Atal Pension Yojana
Full Form of APY
What is APY?
Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed pension scheme in India, launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Finance. It is specifically designed for workers in the unorganized sector—such as domestic help, street vendors, agricultural labourers, and gig workers—who lack formal pension coverage. Under APY, subscribers contribute a fixed monthly amount (ranging from ₹42 to ₹1,454, depending on age and desired pension) into their account until they turn 60. After retirement, they receive a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000, based on their chosen contribution tier. The scheme is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and is available through all major banks and post offices. APY plays a crucial role in extending social security to India's vast informal workforce, reducing old-age poverty and promoting a culture of savings. It is applicable to citizens aged 18–40 years with a savings bank account. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, APY is a frequent topic under government schemes and social welfare policies, making it essential for aspirants to understand its features, eligibility, and benefits.
