National Pension System
Full Form of NPS
What is NPS?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, defined-contribution retirement savings scheme launched by the Government of India in 2004, initially for central government employees and later extended to all citizens. It is regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and aims to provide old-age income security by encouraging systematic savings during an individual’s working years. NPS offers two account types: Tier I (mandatory for government employees, with withdrawal restrictions) and Tier II (voluntary, with more liquidity). Subscribers can choose from various pension fund managers and investment options, including equity, corporate bonds, and government securities. The scheme is portable across jobs and locations, making it suitable for India’s mobile workforce. Contributions qualify for tax deductions under Section 80CCD of the Income Tax Act. NPS is widely used by salaried professionals, self-employed individuals, and government employees as a long-term investment tool. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, NPS is a frequently asked topic under Indian economy and government schemes. Understanding its features, benefits, and tax implications is essential for aspirants aiming for financial awareness sections.
