Packed Cell Volume
Full Form of PCV
What is PCV?
Packed Cell Volume (PCV), also known as Hematocrit, is a medical test that measures the proportion of red blood cells in a blood sample. It is an essential parameter in complete blood count (CBC) tests, used to diagnose and monitor conditions like anemia, polycythemia, dehydration, and blood loss. In India, PCV is routinely performed in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and during routine health check-ups, especially for pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases. The test involves centrifuging a blood sample to separate cells from plasma, and the result is expressed as a percentage. For example, a normal PCV for adult Indian males ranges from 40% to 54% and for females from 36% to 46%. PCV is critical in assessing blood viscosity and oxygen-carrying capacity. It is also used in sports medicine to detect blood doping. In Indian medical entrance exams like NEET PG and nursing exams, PCV is a frequently tested topic, with questions on its clinical significance, normal ranges, and interpretation in various diseases. Understanding PCV helps doctors decide on treatments like blood transfusions and iron supplementation.
