What is ESR?
The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a common blood test that measures how quickly red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle at the bottom of a test tube over a specified period, usually one hour. The test is an indirect indicator of inflammation in the body, as certain proteins produced during inflammation cause red cells to clump and fall faster. In India, ESR is widely used in clinical settings, from small clinics to large hospitals, as a non-specific screening tool for conditions such as infections, autoimmune disorders, cancers, and tissue injury. It is often ordered alongside other tests like C-reactive protein (CRP) to provide a fuller picture of a patient's health. ESR is particularly relevant in monitoring the progression of diseases like tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus, which are prevalent in the Indian subcontinent.
