Red Blood Cell
Full Form of RBC
What is RBC?
Red Blood Cell (RBC), also known as erythrocyte, is the most abundant type of blood cell in the human body. Its primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to all tissues and carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation, facilitated by the iron-rich protein hemoglobin. In India, RBC analysis is a fundamental component of routine health checkups, particularly in diagnosing anemia, which is widespread due to nutritional deficiencies. The RBC count, morphology, and hemoglobin levels are critical parameters in complete blood count (CBC) tests used across clinics and hospitals. Medical students and practitioners rely on RBC indices like mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red cell distribution width (RDW) to classify types of anemia. Knowledge of RBC formation (erythropoiesis), lifespan, and breakdown is essential for understanding conditions such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and polycythemia. In competitive exams like NEET and AIIMS, questions frequently assess RBC structure, function, normal ranges, and related disorders, making it a high-yield topic in biology and pathology.
