Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is an involuntary, rhythmic eye movement that occurs when an individual tracks a moving visual field, consisting of a slow pursuit phase followed by a rapid corrective saccade. In India, OKN is a standard clinical test used by ophthalmologists and neurologists to assess the integrity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex, brainstem function, and visual pathways. It is commonly elicited using a rotating drum or moving striped pattern (OKN strip) during neurological or ophthalmic examinations. OKN is particularly relevant in diagnosing conditions such as brainstem lesions, multiple sclerosis, and certain types of nystagmus.
