What is VNG?

Video Nystagmography, commonly known as VNG, is a modern diagnostic procedure that uses infrared video goggles to record and analyse involuntary eye movements known as nystagmus. These eye movements are closely linked to the vestibular system, the part of the inner ear responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. Doctors across India rely on VNG testing to identify the root cause of vertigo, persistent dizziness, imbalance, and various vestibular disorders in patients. It has largely replaced the older Electronystagmography technique because it offers greater accuracy, is completely non-invasive, and provides real-time visual data without requiring skin electrodes. In India, VNG is performed in ENT outpatient departments, specialised vertigo and balance clinics, and advanced audiology centres across major hospitals in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The test helps differentiate between central nervous system problems and peripheral inner ear issues, guiding appropriate treatment plans. Medical students preparing for NEET PG, ENT entrance examinations, and audiology courses often study VNG as part of their otolaryngology and neuro-otology syllabus.
