Otoacoustic Emissions
Full Form of OAE
What is OAE?
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) are low-intensity sounds produced by the outer hair cells of the cochlea in response to auditory stimulation. In clinical practice, OAE testing is a non-invasive, objective method used to assess the functioning of the inner ear, particularly for screening hearing loss in newborns and young children. In India, OAE has become a standard part of the universal newborn hearing screening program under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), helping identify hearing impairments early to prevent speech and language delays. The test is painless, quick, and can be performed even while the baby is asleep, making it ideal for mass screening. OAE is also used in audiology clinics, ENT departments, and occupational health settings to monitor noise-induced hearing loss. For medical and audiology students in India, OAE is a key topic in ENT and audiology curricula, particularly in postgraduate exams and courses related to speech and hearing. Understanding its principles and applications is essential for pediatricians, audiologists, and public health professionals aiming to reduce the burden of childhood hearing disability.
