VOR stands for VHF Omnidirectional Range, a ground-based radio navigation system widely used in aviation across India and worldwide. Operating in the very high frequency band between 108 and 117.95 MHz, it provides aircraft with continuous bearing information relative to a fixed ground station, allowing pilots to determine their position and follow designated air routes with precision. The system works by transmitting a rotating directional signal that aircraft receivers interpret to display their radial position from the station. In India, the Airports Authority of India operates and maintains an extensive network of VOR stations at major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, along with key air corridors connecting regional centres, supporting both civilian and military flight operations.
