Officer Intelligence Rating
Full Form of OIR
What is OIR?
The Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) is a standardized aptitude test used by the Indian Armed Forces as the first stage of the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. It evaluates a candidate’s verbal and non-verbal reasoning, analytical ability, and decision-making skills under time constraints. The OIR test consists of two sets of objective-type questions—verbal and non-verbal—designed to measure general intelligence rather than subject knowledge. It is administered to candidates applying for officer entries such as NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and TGC. Usually conducted online or on paper at the SSB center, the OIR test is a screening round that filters out a significant number of aspirants before they proceed to the psychological and group testing stages. A good score in OIR is critical because it sets the initial impression and often influences the final merit list. For defense exam preparation in India, OIR is considered a high-revising topic—many coaching institutes offer specific practice modules for it. The test typically lasts 30 to 40 minutes and contains around 60 to 100 questions. Clearing the OIR with a high percentile boosts a candidate’s confidence and increases chances of selection. Therefore, every defense aspirant must understand the OIR pattern and practice regularly to improve speed and accuracy.
