Open Health Exchange
Full Form of OHX
What is OHX?
Open Health Exchange (OHX) is a technical standard and framework designed to enable seamless, secure, and interoperable exchange of health data across different healthcare systems. In India, OHX plays a pivotal role in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to create a unified digital health ecosystem. It allows hospitals, clinics, diagnostic labs, and pharmacies to share patient records, prescriptions, and reports in a standardized format, reducing redundancy and improving continuity of care. OHX is based on open-source principles and aligns with global standards such as FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources). It is used primarily in government-led digital health initiatives, private hospital networks, and health information exchanges across states. The framework is implemented through APIs that connect various health applications to the ABDM's Health Information Exchange (HIE) layer. For medical students and healthcare professionals, understanding OHX is increasingly important for exams like NEET PG and public health certifications, as digital health is a growing topic in India's healthcare curriculum. By facilitating real-time data access and patient-centric care, OHX supports the broader goal of achieving universal health coverage and digital empowerment in the Indian healthcare system.
