Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
Full Form of HIPAA
What is HIPAA?
HIPAA is a United States federal law enacted in 1996 that sets national standards for protecting sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient's consent or knowledge. Although it is an American legislation, HIPAA has significant relevance in India, especially for healthcare providers, business associates, and IT firms that handle protected health information (PHI) of US citizens. Indian medical tourism companies, telemedicine platforms, and health tech startups often adopt HIPAA compliance to serve international clients and build trust. The law mandates administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for electronic protected health information (ePHI) and gives patients rights over their health data. In India, HIPAA is frequently referenced in discussions about data privacy frameworks, particularly after the introduction of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023. Students pursuing medical coding, health informatics, or healthcare management may encounter HIPAA in their curriculum. It remains a benchmark for global health data security and is vital for organizations aiming to partner with US healthcare entities.
