Health Information Exchange
Full Form of HIE
What is HIE?
Health Information Exchange (HIE) refers to the electronic sharing of health-related data among healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, clinics, labs, and pharmacies. In India, HIE is a cornerstone of the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) now called Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), enabling seamless access to patient records across different healthcare providers. It allows doctors to view a patient’s complete medical history—including lab reports, prescriptions, and imaging—regardless of where the patient was previously treated. HIE is primarily used in government health programmes, private hospital networks, and telemedicine platforms to avoid redundant tests and reduce medical errors. The technology relies on interoperability standards like FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and unique health IDs (ABHA numbers). For students appearing for NEET PG, AIIMS, or healthcare informatics exams, understanding HIE is crucial as it forms the backbone of India's digital health infrastructure. Its adoption is rapidly increasing with the government's push for paperless, cashless healthcare under ABDM.
