National Water Framework
Full Form of NWF
What is NWF?
The National Water Framework (NWF) is a comprehensive policy document formulated by NITI Aayog to address India's growing water crisis. It aims to provide a unified, integrated approach to water resource management across all states, emphasizing conservation, equitable distribution, and sustainable use. The framework outlines principles for water governance, including pricing, efficiency, and community participation. It was conceived in 2018 as part of the Government of India's effort to streamline diverse water laws and policies. The NWF is used by policymakers, state governments, and environmental agencies as a guiding document for drafting state-level water laws and implementing projects. It is particularly relevant for civil services examinations such as UPSC, where questions on water governance and constitutional duties often arise. The framework stresses the need for a paradigm shift from supply-side to demand-side management and advocates for the recognition of water as a common pool resource. Its adoption is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) in India.
