Neural Tube Defect
Full Form of NTD
What is NTD?
A Neural Tube Defect (NTD) is a severe congenital condition that occurs when the neural tube—the embryonic structure that develops into the brain and spinal cord—fails to close completely during the first month of pregnancy. In India, NTDs are a major public health concern, with an estimated prevalence of 4 to 8 per 1,000 live births, one of the highest rates globally. This high incidence is largely attributed to widespread folic acid deficiency among women of reproductive age. NTDs encompass conditions such as spina bifida, anencephaly, and encephalocele, leading to lifelong disabilities or fatality. The term is commonly used in prenatal screening programs, maternal health initiatives, and medical education. Government campaigns like the National Iron Plus Initiative emphasize folic acid supplementation to reduce NTD risk. For medical entrance exams such as NEET PG, MBBS, and nursing exams, understanding NTDs is crucial as they form a key topic in embryology and obstetrics. Early diagnosis through ultrasound and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) screening is standard practice. In rural India, awareness and access to preventive measures remain challenges, making NTDs a focus area for public health policies and NGOs working on maternal and child health.
