National Social Register
Full Form of NSR
What is NSR?
The National Social Register is a centralized database maintained by the Government of India to identify and list households eligible for various welfare schemes and social assistance programs. The initiative aims to streamline the delivery of subsidies, pensions, and benefits by creating a single, verified list of beneficiaries across the country. Under the NSR framework, state governments and local authorities conduct surveys to collect socio-economic data of families, including income levels, housing conditions, and access to basic amenities. This data is then used to determine eligibility for central and state-sponsored schemes such as MGNREGA, PDS, Ayushman Bharat, and other targeted welfare programs. The NSR plays a crucial role in reducing duplication, eliminating ghost beneficiaries, and ensuring that assistance reaches the intended population. It is particularly relevant for aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, state public service commissions, and other competitive examinations where questions on government welfare delivery mechanisms frequently appear.
