National Register of Citizens
Full Form of NRC
What is NRC?
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is an official register of all genuine Indian citizens maintained by the Government of India, aimed at identifying and documenting legal citizens and detecting illegal immigrants. Primarily implemented in the state of Assam, the NRC process was first conceived after the Assam Accord of 1985 to address concerns over large-scale migration from Bangladesh. The updated NRC for Assam was finalised in August 2019, listing over 31 million names, but leaving out around 1.9 million applicants. The NRC is used by state and central authorities to verify citizenship status, often linked to other identity documents like Aadhaar. In the broader Indian context, the NRC has sparked debates on citizenship, religious identity, and national security, especially when considered alongside the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). For competitive exams like UPSC, questions on NRC, CAA, and the Assam Accord are common in polity and current affairs sections. The NRC remains a politically sensitive and legally complex issue, with challenges pending in the Supreme Court regarding its implementation and exclusion process.
