National Overseas Fellowship
Full Form of NOF
What is NOF?
The National Overseas Fellowship (NOF) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India, administered by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, designed to provide financial support to students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) for pursuing higher education abroad. The fellowship covers tuition fees, living expenses, airfare, and other contingent costs for selected candidates enrolled in postgraduate or doctoral programs at foreign universities. Established to promote academic excellence and global exposure among underrepresented communities, the NOF aims to create a pool of highly skilled professionals who can contribute to India's development. The scheme is widely utilized by meritorious students who have secured admission to reputed institutions in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Applications are invited annually through a centralized online portal, and selection is based on academic record, research proposal, and the relevance of the chosen field to national priorities. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, knowledge of the NOF is often tested under welfare schemes and social justice policies, making it a key topic in Indian polity and governance sections.
