National Occupational Standards
Full Form of NOS
What is NOS?
National Occupational Standards (NOS) are detailed statements of the skills, knowledge, and understanding required to perform a specific job role competently. In India, NOS form the backbone of the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), which aims to standardize vocational education and training across the country. Developed by Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) under the aegis of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), these standards define performance criteria, underlying knowledge, and scope parameters for various occupations. NOS are used by training providers, assessment agencies, and employers to design curricula, conduct evaluations, and certify workers. They are applicable in sectors ranging from IT and healthcare to construction and retail. For students pursuing diploma courses or vocational streams under the NSQF, understanding NOS is essential for skill certification and career progression. Additionally, questions about the role of NOS in India's skill ecosystem occasionally appear in competitive exams such as UGC NET (Education) and CTET, especially in papers covering vocational pedagogy. The standards ensure that training aligns with industry requirements, thereby enhancing employability and promoting lifelong learning. By clearly outlining expected outputs, NOS also facilitate mobility between different job roles and levels within the framework.
