National Mental Health
Full Form of NMH
What is NMH?
National Mental Health (NMH) is an umbrella term used in India to refer to government-led initiatives, policies, and programs aimed at improving mental healthcare access and reducing the stigma around mental illness. The most prominent of these is the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), launched in 1982 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. NMH encompasses district-level mental health services, awareness campaigns, training of primary care providers, and integration of mental health into general healthcare. It is used in policy documents, health infrastructure planning, and academic curricula for medical and nursing students. India's NMH framework aligns with the World Health Organization's recommendations and the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017, which guarantees the right to mental healthcare for every citizen. For competitive exams like NEET PG, UPSC, and nursing entrance tests, questions on NMH often appear under community medicine and public health sections. The initiative has expanded over decades to cover over 700 districts, with a focus on providing affordable and accessible psychiatric care, especially in rural and underserved areas.
