National Institutional Ranking Framework
Full Form of NIR
What is NIR?
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank higher educational institutions across the country. Launched in 2015, NIRF evaluates colleges, universities, and research institutes on parameters such as teaching and learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. The framework aims to help students and parents make informed choices about where to study and encourages institutions to improve their quality through healthy competition. NIRF rankings are published annually for several categories, including overall, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, and college. The rankings are widely used by students during admissions, by employers for campus placements, and by policymakers to assess institutional performance. For competitive exams like UGC NET or CUET, knowledge of NIRF and its methodology is often tested under current affairs or higher education policies. The framework has significantly enhanced transparency and accountability in Indian higher education, though some critics argue it disproportionately favors large, established institutions. Overall, NIRF plays a crucial role in shaping the academic landscape of India.
