National Institutional Ranking Framework
Full Form of NIRF
What is NIRF?
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank higher education institutions across the country. Launched in 2015, the framework evaluates institutions based on five broad parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception. The rankings are released annually, typically in the month of June, and cover various categories such as universities, engineering colleges, management institutes, pharmacy, medical, law, and architecture institutions. NIRF aims to provide a reliable and transparent system for assessing institutional quality, encouraging healthy competition and continuous improvement. It plays a crucial role in guiding students, parents, and policymakers by highlighting top-performing institutions across disciplines. For aspirants of competitive exams like GATE, CAT, NEET, or CLAT, NIRF rankings serve as a trusted reference while selecting colleges, as the framework emphasizes academic excellence and placement records. The rankings are widely used by state governments and funding agencies for grant allocations and policy decisions. Over the years, NIRF has become a benchmark for institutional reputation in India, influencing both domestic and international perceptions of Indian higher education.
