National Assessment and Accreditation Council
Full Form of NAAC
What is NAAC?
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1994 to assess and accredit higher education institutions in India. Headquartered in Bengaluru, NAAC promotes quality assurance and continuous improvement in teaching, learning, research, and infrastructure. Its assessment framework evaluates institutions on seven criteria: curricular aspects, teaching-learning and evaluation, research and innovation, infrastructure and learning resources, student support, governance, and institutional values. Based on the performance, NAAC assigns grades ranging from A++ to C, with A++ being the highest. Accreditation by NAAC is mandatory for many UGC grants and recognition, and it helps students and parents make informed choices about colleges. The process involves self-study reports, peer team visits, and rigorous data validation. NAAC also encourages institutions to adopt best practices and benchmark against national standards. For competitive exams like UGC NET in education or higher education administration, familiarity with NAAC’s framework is beneficial as it reflects current policy priorities such as the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on accreditation.
