What is NFZ?

A No-Fly Zone (NFZ) is a designated area of airspace over a specific geographic region in which aircraft are prohibited from flying without explicit authorization, typically enforced by military forces. In the Indian context, NFZs are established for various reasons, including protecting critical infrastructure such as nuclear power plants, military installations, and high-security government zones like the Parliament complex and Rashtrapati Bhavan. They are also declared temporarily during major events such as Republic Day celebrations, G20 summits, or natural disasters where airspace security is paramount. The Indian Air Force, in coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), issues notices to airmen (NOTAMs) to communicate NFZ activations.
