Mountain Warfare Training
Full Form of MWT
What is MWT?
Mountain Warfare Training (MWT) refers to specialised military instruction that prepares soldiers for combat and survival in high-altitude, rugged, and snow-covered terrains. In India, MWT is a critical component of the Indian Army's readiness, particularly for operations in the Himalayan borders, including Siachen Glacier, Ladakh, and the North-East. The training covers advanced mountaineering, cold-weather survival, avalanche awareness, high-altitude logistics, and tactical manoeuvres in steep slopes. India’s premier institution for this is the Mountain Warfare and Snow Warfare School in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, which also trains troops from friendly foreign nations. MWT is conducted through a mix of theoretical lessons, rigorous physical conditioning, and field exercises at altitudes above 10,000 feet. The training is essential not only for infantry but also for specialised units like the Gurkhas, Ladakh Scouts, and the Indian Army’s elite special forces. For defence aspirants such as those preparing for the National Defence Academy (NDA) or Combined Defence Services (CDS) exams, understanding MWT is important for questions on military geography and Indian Army organisation. The evolving nature of high-altitude threats, including China’s infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), has made MWT even more relevant in contemporary defence strategies.
